Text Leveling is based on the Fontas and Pinnel benchmark assessment rubric. The levels range from A-Z and students are assessed from kindergarten to the end of fifth grade. To be considered on grade level in the fall, fifth grade students are asked to be at a level S. Anything below this was noted as below and anything above this level was noted as above grade level. This same process was used for the winter and spring, but the on grade level score was a U in the winter and a W in the spring. Each student did make growth, but there were still some students who did not meet the grade level standard.

Selection Tests were provided by Scott Foresman Reading Street. Each selection test consisted of 17 multiple choice questions and three short answer. For this study, only the multiple choice questions were used. This graph shows the class average out of 17 for each week a selection test was given. The dates of each assessment can be seen on the x-axis with bars representing the class average for each of those dates.

Text Dependent Analysis is a response to a prompt asking students to synthesize a story and provide evidence to support their response. When rating students’ TDA responses, a rubric was used. This rubric included ideas, organization, word choice, and mechanics, but for this study only ideas and organization were used for data collection. For students to get a maximum score in ideas (19) and/or organization (9) please reference the rubric below.
